Many doctors first gout treatments are pain relief, either over the counter medication or prescription medication depending on the severity. It is also suggested that the person rest, over working the affected area may cause more pain.

The prescription gout medication of choice by most doctors is nonsteriodal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS). These medications are most effective within the first 12 hours of the attack and usually relieves the discomfort and pain within 2 days.

If you would like to try home remedies for gout you may try over-the-counter medications to bring down the swelling and provide pain relief such as ibuprofen. It is not suggested that aspirin be taken because it can worsen the gout symptoms. A topical application of hemorrhoid ointment can be applied directly to the affected area to help reduce the swelling.

Ice may also be applied several times to a day to help keep the swelling under control. But some gout remedies suggest that a person should stay well hydrated and soak the affected areas in hot water– the hydration and warmth to the joints together should help the crystals dissolve and clear out of the joints.

It is important to stay hydrated if you are prone to gout attacks, because they can occur because of dehydration. Also avoid alcohol intake and heavy eating.

As always, if you are experiencing long-term gout symptoms you should contact your health care professional.
